1. Dirty or Partially Blocked Pilot Assembly
This is due to dust, spider webs, or soot can block the pilot flame, making it too small or
unstable. It prevents the flame from fully heat the thermocouple/thermopile, so the gas
valve shuts off. To fix this a qualified technician can clean the pilot assembly with a
special tool.
2. Weak Thermocouple or Thermopile
These parts generate the small electrical current that keeps the gas valve open. Over
time, they weaken or get dirty. As a result, the fireplace starts, but after a few minutes
the signal drops and the gas valve closes. A qualified technician can test the electrical
readings on these parts and replace them if necessary.
3. Overheating Safety Switch (High-Limit Switch)
If airflow is restricted (dust buildup, blower not running, blocked vents), heat builds up
inside the firebox. As a result, the safety switch shuts the unit off to prevent damage. A
qualified technician can inspect the vents, blower, and clearance spaces for blockages,
and then clean or repair as needed.
4. Faulty Gas Valve or Control Module
Electrical or mechanical failure inside the valve or control board can interrupt the gas
supply. As a result, the fire goes out even if sensors are working. A qualified technician
can take meter readings on the valve to determine if it is in the acceptable range, or
replace the valve, if necessary.
A faint gas odor when your pilot light is burning can be normal, as a very small amount of gas is released during combustion. However, a strong or persistent gas smell is never normal and may indicate a leak or problem with the gas line, valve, or connections. If you smell gas, leave the home immediately and contact emergency services at Xcel Energy at 800-895-2999.
Your safety is the priority. Annual inspections help identify issues with seals, fittings, or valves
before they become hazardous.
This is usually caused by mineral deposits and combustion byproducts that bond to the glass over time. While it’s common, buildup can indicate worn seals which allow moisture or combustion residue to collect inside. It can also be caused by infrequent cleaning which allow deposits to harden and become more difficult to remove. We use a special glass cleaner specifically designed for gas fireplaces. However, if the deposits are left too long on the glass, then it may be permanently etched into the glass. When this happens, the glass will need to be replaced. Annual service helps keep the glass clear and ensures the seals and gaskets are in good condition.
